Where vessels carrying such valuable cargo sailed at their own risk of pirates and other opportunist looking for quick bounty and the thrill of taking whatever they wanted. Such vessels were not without their own ways of protecting themselves but battle circumstances sometimes enabled the treasures from the victors or pillaged to end up at the bottom of the sea, where even today, salvage vessel are still searching for some as yet found lost treasures.
